What Causes Breast Cancer?

The BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are concerned to cause cancer, which is actually the mutations in these genes that increase the risks of obtaining certain types of cancer – generally breast and ovarian cancer. The mutations of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can be inherited, but it is not the main cause of cancer. Only 5-10% of women have a BRCA mutation, however, research has shown that exist risk factors that raise the chances of getting BRCA mutation.

If a test proved the existence of the mutation, it does not mean that the disease will certainly develop. Nowadays, there are ways to decrease the chances of getting cancer or detecting it at the early stages. Anyways, if you do not have the mutation it does not mean that you are free of getting breast cancer. Unfortunately, 90-95% of women with breast cancer and 85% of women with ovarian cancer do not have mutations in their BRCA genes.

What decreases the risks?

  • Control your weight
  • Be physically active
  • Avoid an excessive amount of alcohol
  • Do not smoke
  • Breastfeed
  • Avoid birth control pills
  • Avoid post-menopausal hormones
  • Do not forget screening

What increases the risks?

  • Genetic mutations
  • Reproductive history
  • Having dense breasts
  • Radiation therapy
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Being overweight or obese
