Types of heart diseases

Types of heart diseases

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD)

CAD is the most common type of heart disease. It affects the arteries that transfer blood to the heart in such a way that cholesterol and fat get stuck and the arteries start to narrow, not allowing the oxygen to get to the heart. The lack of enough oxygen may lead to chest pain or heart attack

  • Arrhythmia

It is responsible for an unnatural heartbeat. Arrhythmia is differentiated with a slow heartbeat (bradycardia), fast heartbeat (tachycardia) and irregular heartbeat. Usually, it develops from other heart problems but can appear in its own.

  • Heart failure

Represents an improper way of transferring oxygen-rich blood efficiently. The body starts to lack oxygen. The heart is not capable of pumping correctly and is unable to fill enough blood.

  • Heart Valve Disease

Heart valves are securing the flow of the blood forward after being pumped through the heart. The disease occurs when the valves stop to work properly and the heart loses its efficiency.

  • Heart Muscle Disease (Cardiomyopathy)

The heart is too weak to pump properly, as the muscle becomes stretched, thickened, or stiff. The causes may be a genetic inheritance, reactions to drugs or alcohol, infections etc. Sometimes it is difficult to detect the cause.

  • Congenital heart disease

The disease starts to develop before birth when the baby is still forming in the womb. There are two types of congenital heart disease:

  • Atrial septal defects (ASD) and ventricular septal defects (VSD) takes place when holes separate the left and right sides of the heart.
  • Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) happens when a narrow valve causes a higher flow of blood to the lungs.
